He is on a quest: to pass through illness to rediscover the ethics of normal life. ![]() But if Hans is part Romantic hero, he is also part arch-malinger, a young man who does everything he can to join the institutionally coddled life at the mountaintop. Mann’s protagonist, Hans Castorp, comes to a sanatorium for a three-week visit with his sick cousin but ends up staying for seven years, adopting the role of the TB patient with a sense of exaltation and even elation. In the nineteenth century, and not just in Germany, tuberculosis was the Romantic’s illness that is, those afflicted with TB were considered sensitive, brooding, creative, and interesting. But it is also, in a broader sense, an epic of illness-an ambitious attempt to show how being ill was experienced at a particular time in a particular culture. Weigand called it “the epic of disease.” It is more accurate to say that the novel is the epic of a particular disease, tuberculosis, one which has accompanied humans at least since they started building and settling in cities. The exhibition ran only once per year, and entry marked you as a successful artist, leading to sales and commissions from wealthy and powerful patrons-rejection was devastating. Next, the Académie ran the Paris Salon, the only permitted public art exhibition in France. First, France’s most prestigious art school, the Ecole des Beaux Arts, was run by the Académie, who defined not only its strict curriculum, but the stringent entry requirements that taught young artists to adhere to approved styles before they even began their training. An authority this complete is hard to imagine in today’s art world, but the Académie had a monopoly on three critical resources. In 1795 the state-sponsored French Academies of Music, Architecture, and Painting & Sculpture merged into the Académie des Beaux-Arts, becoming singularly responsible for defining nearly every aspect of French art, and holding final judgment on what was ‘good’ and ‘bad’ art for more than 150 years. ![]() From its subject matter and color scheme to the visibility of each brushstroke, Alexandre Cabanel’s artwork was defined by the total authority of the Académie-but even under extreme constraint, creativity finds ways to express itself. ![]() ![]() ![]() Erotica is growing faster as e-books make it easier to download and read dirty stories discreetly. They have been turned to animals and cast out of Asgard by the Frost Giants who have taken over there. While there he encounters a fox, eagle and bear who turn out to be the gods Loki, Odin and Thor. After putting up with this for a while, Odd decides to head out on his own and sets out for his father’s hut where he stayed when out collecting wood. This winter has been around for longer than normal and the villagers are getting cranky with one another. Even though all the bad things have happened to him, he is still cheerful and smiles all the time, which drives the others in the village crazy. On top of all this, Odd is a bit, well, odd. His father had been drowned on a Viking raid (he was, as most were, a part time Viking and a full time woodworker), he shattered his leg soon after trying to bring down a tree by himself, and his mother (whom had been taken by his father on one such raid) had remarried another in the village who already had a family and had no time for a crippled stepson. ![]() His name means Tip of a blade and it was lucky, but nothing about Odd seemed lucky. ![]() Summary: Odd is a young boy in a Norse village.
